As the first season of The Westies winds down, a few storylines ramp up.
Pete and Mike from SMS Mashups discuss the events from the recent episode of The Westies, available on MGM+.
Brendan’s Plan for the Irish Republican Army:
Brendan Cahill tasks Bridget and Mary with driving the car bomb to where Colonel General Markham is staying to blow up the car as he is exiting the building. However, the plan goes awry when the Mothers of Irish Freedom show up protesting Markham being in the city. Not only were there a lot of Irish mothers there protesting, but some of them also had their kids with them. Bridget, as Brendan predicted, got cold feet and did not push the button to blow up the car when Markham was within the blast area. Bridget and Mary walk away, and Brendan will most likely not be too happy about that.

Glenn Keenan’s Plan:
After sustaining a severe beating, Glenn tells Polk that they went after the wrong person in Sweeney’s crew before. The better person to go after would be Dukey, who has a bunch of skeletons in his closet. Glenn confronts Sweeney to talk with Dukey, but after a bit of back-and-forth with Glenn, Sweeney not-so-politely tells him to leave the bar. So instead, Glenn approaches a “woman of the night” to let her know he knows who gave her the scar on her face when she was raped. He offers her a way to get stable, drug-wise, in turn for her to sign an affidavit and go on record about who raped and cut her. Polk asks if Glenn is doing this as a way for revenge, and if he is going to bring Duke in alive. We got a bit more backstory about Glenn’s wife, and it was what made Glenn what he is at this time.
Glenn gets the arrest warrant for Dukey and goes to carry it out, but first, he wants to tune up Dukey for the beating and pissing on him in the last episode. Keenan goes all out in his beating of Dukey, even smashing his face on a curb, knocking out many of Dukey’s teeth. There was a lot more damage than that, but did Glenn take it too far? Is Dukey even going to be able to talk? Did Glenn stop before killing Dukey?
Jimmy’s Generosity:
The drug business seems to be treating Jimmy and his crew very lucratively. However, Jimmy is a bit too loose with paying his crew and kicking up to Sweeney that he did not have enough overhead to cover the next batch to sell. One of Jimmy’s crew introduces them to a kid named Tad, who wants to buy a brick of coke which he would pay top dollar for. Jimmy asks if Sweeney would cover the next round, but Sweeney uses this as a learning curve moment and directs him to contact a loanshark for the money instead. The loanshark is Ruby Stein, and at first does not want to loan them the money because he does not know them. Jimmy and Mickey tell Ruby that Sweeney sent them to him, and with that, Ruby gives them half of the money they were asking for.
Fun Fact: Ruby Stein was a real-life loanshark back in the 60s and 70s. Here is a link to a Facebook post about Ruby Stein.
Here is a link to an article written about The Westies crew having ties to a museum. Some of the names look slightly familiar; will any of these things come up if there were to be more seasons of The Westies? I surely hope so.

Jimmy and Mickey get another brick from a Dominican they were working with. When they go to sell the brick to Tad, Gotti shows up, crashes the party, takes the brick away, and says he has told the Dominican they have been dealing with never to sell Jimmy’s crew another brick. Gotti had Tad set up Jimmy to pay off some of the debt Tad owed to Gotti. Now, with no drugs to sell and owing a loanshark money, they have no choice but to agree to Gotti’s offer. Only now, instead of a 50/50 offer, it is now a 75/25 split in favor of Gotti. To seal the deal, Jimmy or Mickey had to take out Tad because it would not be good to allow someone like him to spread the word that Jimmy was robbed. If they did not do it, the offer would be off the table, so Mickey took the gun Gotti was offering and took out Tad.

Two Episodes Left:
With only two episodes left of the season, we are hoping for more seasons for sure. What will these next two episodes bring? Will the season end on a cliffhanger? I read somewhere that there are plans for multiple seasons, so hopefully the numbers are up on this series, and MGM+ will renew for at least another season, if not more.
How do you rank this episode, or this season? Let us know!
